| 1857 Shawnee Census, Kansas Territory
This Shawnee census is at the end of roll M1813-2. It consists of
two parts and has its own pagination. The first part is entitled, "Census of those Shawnee...who
have made...the selections of Two Hundred Acres of Land each, to which they are entitled to
under...the treaty made with that tribe on the 10th May 1854." The index, which begins at page 1,
is arranged roughly alphabetically by the first letter of the surname and includes remarks for
some persons, such as relationships to other enumerated Shawnees, physical disabilities, death
since the taking of the census, and place of residence. The census follows its index, and includes
the following information: name, legal description of the land (range, township, and section
number), and the number of acres. The second part of the Shawnee census is entitled "Census of
the Shawnees...who have elected to hold in common the land to which they are entitled, two hundred
acres each, under...the treaty made with that tribe on the 10th May 1854." The index, which begins
at page 103, is arranged roughly alphabetically by the first letter of the surname. Following the
index, on page 113, is a listing of the legal description of the land (range, township, and
section number), and the number of acres. Pages 114 to 121 contain the legal description of land
set aside for various purposes described therein; some of the land was set aside for named
individuals, churches, schools, and other associations entitled to more than 200 acres. |
