Vigo County, IN 1870 Federal Census TOWNSHIP INFORMATION STATUS of the files on-line for this census in the following directory: http://us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/in/vigo/1870/ ABOUT VIGO COUNTY: Vigo County is named in honor of Francis Vigo, an Italian tradesman who was instrumental in the capture of Fort Vincennes by George Rogers Clark, assisted in financing Clark's expedition and American Revolutionary War efforts, and served as an agent obtaining military information for Clark against British campaigns on what was then the frontier. Francis Vigo was of Italian heritage but a citizen of Spain due to his residence in St. Louis. Sullivan County was formed in 1817, and the area that later became Vigo County was part of it until 1818, when the county was created by an act of the Indiana General Assembly which took effect on February 1. Its borders changed several times; in 1821, part of the county was formed into Parke County, and later that year Putnam County was formed which also affected Vigo's borders. The final change came in 1873 when the present boundaries were defined. In 1811, while General William Henry Harrison (later the 6th President of the United States) marched his army north From Vincennes to meet the Indians at the Battle of Tippecanoe, the army encamped on the high grounds of Terre Haute and constructed a fort overlooking the Wabash River, later named Fort Harrison. The fort protected the army's supply lines and the capital of the Indiana Territory downstream in Vincennes. Leaving the fort and a small garrison under Colonel James Miller, Harrison led his army to the Tippecanoe battleground, where it confronted an army led by the Shawnee prophet, Tenskwatawa. After the outbreak of the War of 1812, Captain Zachary Taylor (later the 12th President of the United Staes) was ordered by Harrison to leave Fort Knox and assume command of Fort Harrison.
