Amite, MS 1870 Federal Census NOTES 1870 US Census Images of Amite County Mississippi The donation of the 1870 Amite County, Mississippi, Census images for permanent, free display in the USGenWeb Archives was made possible through the generosity of Nancy Waite and by the efforts of John Cain who was instrumental in the preparation of the images. These census images are not to be republished or redistributed without the permission of Nancy Waite. The 1870 Amite County, Mississippi, Census contains 277 pages (census images), numbered 0376a through 0514b. This numbering scheme uses the stamped number in the upper right hand corner of alternate pages rather than the "Page No. ___" in the upper left hand corner. This makes the images compatible with published census indices. Since only alternate pages were given stamped numbers, we use the suffix "a" and "b" to distinguish between pages. Ex: The first page is stamped 376 and the file is called 0376a. The following page has no stamp and is called 0376b. There were some pages out of sequence in the microfilm and were corrected when making the electronic images in order to maintain the dwelling# / Family# in sequence. The 41st and 42nd pages were reversed and page 42 was stamped 396. When numbering the images, the pages were put back in order and the 396 was removed from page 42 and placed on page 41. The same was true of the 289th / 290th page. The pages were placed back in order when numbering the images and the stamped number 490 was removed from page 229 and placed on 228. Page 0492b is a blank page here and in the microfilm. The name of each image file is the page number. The image file 00sample.jpg has some handwriting samples taken from these pages that might prove helpful.
