It was named for John Adams, the second President of the United States. Its county seat is Gettysburg, which between July 1 and July 3, 1863, was the site of the bloodiest and most significant battle of the American Civil War. As a result, Adams County is a center for Civil War-related tourism. President Dwight D. Eisenhower had his retirement home just outside of Gettysburg.
