Boise County, ID 1870 Federal Census DISTRICT INFORMATION The files on-line for this census can be found in the following directory: http://www.us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/id/boise/1870/ ABOUT BOISE COUNTY: Boise county was established on February 4, 1864, with its county seat at Idaho City. It was named for the Boise River, which was named by French-Canadian explorers and trappers. It is one of four Idaho counties that also existed under Washington Territory. When it was established, it contained all of present Ada, Canyon, and Payette counties, much of present-day Boise, Gem, Washington counties, and small portions of Adams, Custer, Owyhee, and Valley counties. Ada County was created in December 1864, taking land from Boise County, including the town of Boise, which is why Boise town is not in Boise County.
