The name refers to Captain James Lawrence, who uttered the famous words "Don't give up the ship." after being moratlly wounded during the War of 1812. Prior to Lawrence County's creation, it was organized as "Leatherwood Township." Enumerators were instructed to enter an "M" for married or a "W" for widowed in the Married/Widowed column, where applicable. This enumerator entered a hash mark "/" for both married and widowed. This transcription has an "X" where the enumerator entered a hash mark, which is the standard practice for our transctiptions. The enumerators used "Ia" as an abbreviation for Indiana, which was a common practice during this time period. Within a few years, though, "Ia" was being used for Iowa. ENUMERATOR REMARKS: Within the last year no malady has prevailed to such an extent as to be called an epidemic. There have been fewer cases than usual of the diseases common to this district, such as billious, remittant, intermittant and typhoid fever, pneumonia, enpsipilas, etc. Upon the whole, the past season has been remarkably healthy. Besides lime and freestone water we have some mineral springs containing chiefly sulphur and the salts of magnesia. The soil in general is productive, being sandy along White River and clay in other portions of the County. The most common timbers are beech, sugar t ree, walnut, poplar, hickory, ash, cherry, hack berry, gum and all kinds of Oak. There is abundance of lime stone rock which might be converted converted into lime and appropriated to fertilizing the soils.
