Individuals desiring to use this material in their own research may do so. ========================================================================== Formatted by USGenWeb Census Project® File Manager, Russell Anderson All of the above information must remain when copied or downloaded. ========================================================================== Notes about 1850 and 1860 Slave Census Enumerations: For Slave number there are a number of different ways the enumerators used this field: 1) every slave is entered individually 2) every slave of the same age is entered with the number with that particular age 3) first slave number is the total number of slaves for that owner, every other slave number follows one of the first 2 numbering schemes 4) slave number indicates a sequential listing of all slaves for that owner - 1 to ?? For Slave Color: B - Black Col - Colored M - Mulatto Y - Yellow On occasion, some enumerators will only list a value in this column if it is something other than Black. For Slaves over 100 years old, frequently (not always) the name of the slave is listed. While women were not supposed to be able to own property at the time of these census enumerations, there are numerous entries where the owner of the slaves either has a "female" first name or is identified as "Mrs." ========================================================================================== NOTE: Specifically for this file, the enumerator instructions said, "Insert, in figures, opposite the name of the owner, a mark or number designating the fugitives who, having escaped within the year, have not been returned to their owners." It is apparent from the numbering that this instruction was not followed.
