This index is based on a single person's reading of old handwriting.
I tried my best to be accurate and reproduce the spellings which the census takers used, even when it went against expectation (thus what is clearly the same family name may have two or more different spellings).
Some names were unclear because of smudges, mold spots, fading, or shadow, and in such cases I made my best guess at the name. These names are marked with question marks.
The names on pages 175, 347, and 348 were particularly difficult to decipher due to mold damage.
